Perhentian Island, 3 days 2 nights from 15 September – 17 September 2016

Since my in-laws love snorkeling, we decided on a trip to Perhentian Besar. After doing our research, Perhentian Besar was more of a family place compared to Perhentian Kecil.

We flew early in the morning from KLIA 1 to Kota Bahru (45 minutes journey). When we arrived, we were met by our driver, from the company Lovely Travels and Tours Sdn Bhd and we were escorted to our minivan for an hour's drive to Kuala Besut jetty.

As this was my 1st time in Kelantan, the scenery was “kampung” throughout our 1 hour journey from Kota Bharu to Kuala Besut jetty.

Upon arrival, we were greeted by the friendly, chatty owner, Mr. Ong Bu Hang at his office. He told us the boat to Perhentian Besar will only be available at 9.45am and he asked us to tour around the area and come back to the office at that time. We went to the nearest mamak store for some roti canai and teh tarik.

From his office to the jetty, we had to walk about 3 minutes and were later ushered to our boat. The journey to Pulau Perhentian Besar (stopping by at Pulau Perhentian Kecil) took approximately 40 minutes.

This was our itinerary during our stay in Pulau Perhentian Besar:-

Day 1:

We booked at The Barat Perhentian Resort. This resort is conveniently located in front of the jetty. We arrived early and obviously our rooms were not ready yet. We decided to have our brunch at the resort restaurant while waiting for our rooms.

After the meal, we were given the keys to our room and our room was located on the 1st floor (i.e. on top of the resort’s kitchen) with a big balcony area and sea view.

We fell asleep as we were super tired and woke up at about 4pm. We then decided to tour around the island and go for a swim.

We had dinner at our resort restaurant.

Day 2

Brunch at a nearby café and we signed up for Package A snorkeling (afternoon session at 2pm). We were brought to Teluk K.K., Shark Bay, Turtle Point and Turtle Beach by boat.

We got back and it was time for dinner. Again, we decided to have our dinner at the resort restaurant and we opted for BBQ.

Day 3

We had to wake up early for our early boat ride to Kuala Besut at 8am.

Upon arrival at Kuala Besut, we negotiated with Mr. Ong to bring us sightseeing at Kota Bharu. The sightseeing only cost us RM100 for 4 adults and 1 kid, with our very own air-cond private van.

We were brought to the following places:-

“Keropok” shop

At this shop, we get to see how the keropok are made and sample the keropok. They do sell packets of raw “keropok” for you to buy and bring back to fry.

Thai Chinese temple

A beautiful, spacious temple located near the city centre.
Address:

Wat Phothikyan Phut Thak Tham
Kampung Balai
16300 Bachok
Kelantan

Not sure why there is a dinosaur at the temple

Chinese street
The only Chinese street in Kota Bahru town centre where you will see majority Chinese. I saw a coffee shop selling roast pork rice!

Siti Khadijah market
If you are in Kota Bharu, this is a must place to visit. It’s actually a multi-storey market, consisting of wet and dry markets, where you can buy local fruits and meat on the ground floor, silver, ornaments and herbs on the first floor and malay ready-made attire, clothes and batik on the second floor.

Details about the resort and other charges:

Beach

Situated at a very nice location and easy walking distance to the other side of the beach and rest of the accommodations. Certain parts of the beach will have sharp pebbles and broken corals.

Shark at the beach

Check out the broken coral. Advisable to wear sandals

Room

We stayed in the Deluxe Seaview room with big balcony. Inside the room, it’s spacious and pretty basic, i.e. queen size double bed, TV (not working as there is no signal), towels, shampoo cum showel gel, air-cond, mini fridge, water heater shower facility and daily a bottle of mineral water.

Wi-Fi

The resort provided wi-fi with password but it was so difficult to connect to the wi-fi as there were so many people using it. The guests and outsiders will come to the reception area and use the wi-fi, making it congested for the guests of the resort. Once connected, it’s very slow to upload. It was pretty frustrating. Wi-Fi should be given to guests of Barat and not for all.

Food and Beverages at the resort restaurant

They serve Western, Asian and local food. The taste and quality is of reasonable standard. If you prefer cheaper food and beverages, try the other café nearby and the standard is slightly below average. As for the price, it is similar to the café you find in Kuala Lumpur (approximately from RM20-RM40). A can of Tiger beer will cost you RM10.00.

We do recommend the BBQ. The BBQ was nice. All you need to do is choose your meat and seafood at the BBQ counter. The staff will weigh how heavy the meat and seafood and let you know the price. Once you agree on the price, the staff will proceed to BBQ it for you.

Our BBQ squid with accompanying sauces
BBQ chicken wings
BBQ lamb. We love this the most. Too bad, they did not serve with mint sauce, which was a minus point
Staff

The staff were quite friendly and approachable.

Activities

The resort offers snorkeling and diving trips. We did the snorkeling package A (Teluk KeKe., Shark Bay, Turtle Point and Turtle Beach). Snorkeling gears are provided when you signed up for the package. It was worthwhile and we did see many fishes in the clear blue water. However, there were no sharks at Shark Bay. We managed to find the shark at the beach instead.

Turtle Beach is the nicest, quiet clean beach. The best beach to relax and unwind.
