Field of Burnt Rice (Beras Terbakar), Langkawi – 25 September 2016

The entrance

We thought it was a big padi field with burnt rice, but in the end there was nothing much to see. In my personal view, it was a waste of time. However, if you are interested in history, then do come here for a visit.

We drove to Padang Matsirat, parked our car at an open space in front of a local market. Then, headed towards a village and cut across to our left into the local stores selling handicrafts, toys and drinks. After walking for approximately 5 minutes we arrived at the Field of Burnt Rice. It is located at the compound of the house belonging to Ku Halim Bin Ku Hassan.

Kota Mahsuri, Langkawi – 25 September 2016

Entrance to Kota Mahsuri

When I was last here, back in 2003, I remembered very vaguely that I visited the Mahsuri tomb and well. It was free admission back then.   Now, a building has been constructed at the Kota Mahsuri and an entrance fee is charged.

As you enter the building, there will be musicians playing the Malay traditional instruments and you will be able to read the history of Mahsuri and her family line at the entrance and inside the museum.

This place will appeal to the foreigners who don’t know the history of Mahsuri or about Malay traditional musical instruments, but for the locals, as we have learnt it from school, it’s a time to freshen up our memories.

Showing how Mahsuri was executed
In my personal view, there is not much to see. Once you are inside the building, it will tell you the history and there is a shop selling local handicrafts. After you have passed through the shop, it will bring you to the tomb of Mahsuri and the well.

The Mahsuri Well

After you have visited the tomb and the well, walk further and there are batik shops and Kampung Kedah (traditional malay wooden houses), portraying how the villagers lived their lives during the Mahsuri period. You can also enter the wooden stilt houses and have a look. Please remove your shoes at the wooden staircase prior entering a wooden house.

Once you have visited the wooden houses, there are traditional games at the garden, i.e. congkak and wooden swings and again more shops.

As you enter the main building again, prior to exiting the building, there will be a museum of our solar system and thereafter it will lead you to an air-cond museum where weapons and traditional utensils for farming are displayed in a showcase.
