Magical Forest Charity Run 2016

  • 29 May 2016
  • Taman Botani Shah Alam
  • Flagged off at 7.15a.m. for 7 km
  • My category – 7km
  • Price – RM69
  • Race Pack – Black/Green T-Shirt, vouchers, black drawstring bag, registration tag, a box of Fitbar cereal energy bars, Sun-Maid raisins, MR DIY pen
  • Goodies – Leaf medal, apple, a packet of Mamee, Fitbar cereal energy bar, biscuits and mineral water upon finishing the run

Steve and I left home at 5.50a.m. and arrived at the parking lot of Taman Botani at 6.35a.m. and managed to find a nice parking spot in front of the entrance to the run. Since we were early, we decided to sit inside our car and went over to the starting point at 7a.m.

My new and expensive Adidas Ultra Boost

We were flagged off at 7.20a.m sharp. This time the route that they used was the opposite way round from the Lunar Run 2016. A lot of people were shocked with the route as they did not expect it to be so hilly. When going up the hill, we walk and ran when downhill.

There were 2 water stations; one at 2km and the other at 5km and the organiser served mineral water and isotonic drinks.

While running, there are nice greeneries and a small lake. Also, you get to take pictures with fairies and pixies and some dressed up animals.

Steve ran all the way from beginning till the end and finished at 41 minutes. I managed to finish it in just an hour.

When we arrived at the finishing point, we were given our medal, goodies, mineral water and apple. You can help yourself with cendol and Chocomex chocolate drinks. We also sign up as guests to FRIM and received a pen and cloth bag.

There was a lucky draw but we decided to leave for our morning breakfast of roti canai & tosei at the mamak store in Shah Alam and then after 1st round, to Klang for bak kut teh.

It was worth it for the money we paid and the organiser did a good job.

Royal Icing Decorating Cookies Class

Date    :           21 May 2016
Time   :           1.30-7.00pm
Venue :           Scott Garden SOHO, Old Klang Road
Price   :           RM280
Chef    :           Shirlyn (Cookies Art by Shirlyn) -012 6386038

(Brought back our decorated cookies)

This was my 1st time attending a royal icing decorating cookies course. Flower, leaves and vase shaped cookies were all prepared for us on the table.

We were given the recipe on how to bake the cookies and how to prepare royal icing. Once royal icing is done, to colour it and ensure that it is sufficiently liquidy. After that, the royal icing was poured into plastic piping and we used rubber bands to tie it at the top. We needed to ensure that the royal icing must have spaced to move around.

We were given samples of lines and shapes to practice prior to trying it on our cookies.   So, cut a tiny tip off from the piping, gently squeeze and bring the icing upwards and drag it across the line.

We were taught/informed about:-

(a)       drawing the border of the cookies
(b)       how to hold the piping
-line must be in the middle
(c)       squeezing the royal icing and using the needle to even it and “shake” gently
-to squeeze a lot of icing when colouring (to create puffiness)
-shaking it gently to ensure that royal icing is also even out and smooth
(d)       how to do wet on wet
            - 1 layer of royal icing and prior letting it dry, another layer (different colour) of royal icing is being squeezed onto the wet royal icing
-also, to use the needle to make both colours blend in

After all cookies were coloured, once it’s dry, we stacked the cookies to make it into a flower decoration.

It was a very interesting lesson and I enjoyed it. Too bad, I can’t eat many of the cookies as it was super duper sweet, but Steve and Salaree helped me to finish them.

These are the cookies that I decorated. Workmanship not so good and someone accidentally smeared my leaves
Once the cookies have been decorated, it's not yet time to eat. Time for cookies arrangement

My little girl enjoyed it so much. It was super sweet

It was a tour around Universiti Malaya, faculties and sports complex that I never knew existed, even though I studied there in 2000. I never really explored the place, except going to the law faculty and Dewan Chancelor.

While waiting, we did some exercises to warm-up our bodies. We were flagged off at 7.00a.m sharp (if not mistaken there are 10waves).

It was all about running, completing the obstacles (climbing, balancing, going over the wall, ropes, crawling), getting ourselves covered with mud and jump in/washed off with ice water.

There were 2 water stations and the organiser served mineral water.

All of us finished pretty early at about 8.50 am. After that, we got ourselves changed and went off for some chicken rice at Jalan Gasing.

If you were to compare this challenge with other challenges that we participated in before, this was considered quite mild and boring.

The organiser did a good job but not sure whether we would like to participate anymore in this kind of run and obstacle course.
